Brother to Brother Mentoring Program
It Takes a
Village to Raise a Child
What
is a mentor?
Mentors are
reliable adults who establish a bond based on mutual
respect and loyalty with younger, less experienced persons,
encouraging their total growth
Mentors can be role models for appropriate behaviors and
values
Mentors can be tutors and teaches helping youth acquire
knowledge by showing them how to do things
Mentors can be trusted supportive friends, helping youth
build self-esteem, listening to their ides and concerns,
expressing belief in their abilities and giving
constructive criticism
Mentors can introduce youth to new people, places and
ideas, engaging them in positive activities, helping them
to set goals and explore options and turn difficult
situations into learning experiences
Mentorships are free and mentors are volunteers recruited
throughout the San Francisco Community
Program coordinators try to create suitable pairs by
matching mentors and mentees with common interests
